MRI Scan - an effective tool of modern medicine

MRI scans have become an important factor in medical diagnosis and are very popular today among medical practitioners and health care providers. In an MRI report you get all the details in a very short time and there are no side effects on the human body scanned. You can get clear and detailed images of structures and organs of your body such as tissues, bones, nerves and muscles using the radio and magnetic waves using the MRI technique.

It is said that the magnetic waves produced by a magnetic resonance image is ten to thirty-thousand times stronger than the magnetic effect of earth. The cells of your body when receive these powerful magnetic waves, they retaliate and send some signal which these powerful gigantic machines receive and propel to the computer. This is how you get the image of your internal organs on a computer using a MRI scan.

As the image of a bone is different from that of a muscle, the professional can easily identify the organ and its defect using the MRI scan. Also, if the internal organs have some tumor or any abnormalities, that also show up in these scans. That’s why the MRI scans are considered the most reliable technology of modern medicine.

MRI scans help the professionals to find out the injuries or defect in your body accurately so that they can quickly diagnose and decide upon your disease. While undergoing a MRI scan you need not worry about any radiation harmful to your body as in a CT scan or an X-ray.

However, if you are a patient having a metal implant in your body you will be advised to avoid a MRI scan, as the scanner is a very powerful instrument in attracting metal objects. Before you go into the scan machine, you will be advised to keep away all your metal accessories from your body including the clothing as they may contain some metallic buttons or other things attached to it.

Before making yourself ready for an MRI scan you should be able to answer the questions of a radiographer which relate to metal in your body. Your body should be absolutely metal free to become eligible for the scan. If necessary, you can lock your jewelry and other valuables including your credits cards in a locker.

For your own safety you will be advised to keep yourself away from any of the metal objects. You are also advised not to wear any dress with metal on it. Alternatively you can wear a hospital gown which is the safest garment for the scan.

The cost of MRI scan depends on the need and requirement of details. The cost of an MRI scan is very expensive, as the cost of scanner and expenses for its maintenance is higher than a CT or X-ray equipment. For getting an MRI done, you need not get admitted or stay overnight in a hospital.

As an MRI scan is going to take just a short while, you can stay still comfortably into the scanner by obeying the guidelines of a radiologist. You do not require any anesthesia for the MRI scan, although in some cases, such as children, mild sedation or medication is given to ensure relaxation. As soon as the scan is over you can resume your normal and routine activities.
