When you purchase a book you purchase the rights to read and keep that book. You do have the right to reproduce that book.

There have been many instances when the law enforcing agencies have found pirated books being sold in the market for low rates. These books are sold at prices that are less than 1/10th their original price and at times even less.

There are different types of criminals and each one breaks the law in different ways. When an author publishes a book and releases the same in the market, they permit the purchaser to have full rights on that particular copy of that book.

It is clearly mentioned that the contents of the book may not be reproduced by any means that include manual, photocopying, electronic means (like scanning) etc. The rules also state that the pages of the book may not be transmitted via any media like fax or email. However this does not stop the criminals of copying the book and selling it in the market.

There have been occasions when contents from a book have been published on websites without any mention of the name of the author or the publisher. Some people even go to the extent of claiming that the content has been written by them and belongs to them too. These things are in breach of the law and if required, the author can suit criminal charges against the person who has used the duplicated content.

Reading a book ad discussing the contents with others is no problem. Also, if one uses knowledge obtained from the book in their compositions and mention that part of the contents was sourced from a particular book, which too is no problem. The problem arises when entire chapters of the book are ripped of and used elsewhere without any permission of the author.

An author spends lots of time in gathering material for his book and this involves a lot of costs too. If someone just copies the matter from the book and publishes them elsewhere, it results in financial loss to the author as well as to the publisher. With books now being able in .PDF format it is even easier to copy them. Fortunately, there are some programs available that prevent these books from being copied.

These books are encoded using special algorithms and then it becomes very difficult, at times impossible, to copy them. These programs not just save the contents of the author; they help him earn the money that is due to him by ensuring that only legal copies are available in the market. One should be grateful the authors and publishers for providing us with the content that we read every day. Purchasing legal copies of their books can ensure this.
